2008 CARDV Mother’s Day Run/Walk for Safe Families

CARDV’s 6th Annual Mother’s Day Run/Walk for Safe Families, held on Saturday, May 10, 2008 was our most successful ever.  The 396 participants and CARDV’s generous sponsors and donors raised over $24,000 to help end domestic and sexual violence in Linn and Benton Counties!

Albany Police Chief Ed Boyd officially started the race, then joined in and ran the 5K placing 1st in his age division!  149 runners and 111 walkers enjoyed the 5K course which started on Western St. in Corvallis and wound through Pioneer and Avery Parks.

John Arnold won the overall race in a time of 17:24. The first female runner to cross the finish line was Allison Furey with a time of 19:39.  She placed 5th overall.  John and Allison were both in the 20-29 age group.

Molly Steinbacher was our first 5K walker over the finish line with a time of 33:16.

Fun Walk:

132 walkers participated in the two-mile fun walk, which started at the same place as the run but then headed up Corvallis’ lovely Riverfront Park. Walk participants ranged in age from 6 weeks to 83 years. Flowers donated by Stargazers Florists and chocolates donated by Burst's Candies were handed out to the first three dozen walkers to cross the finish line.

Emceeing the event this year was Bob Holt, Director of Athletics for Corvallis High School.

Family Fun & Safety Fair:

The Family Fun & Safety Fair is sponsored each year by local organizations to promote the concept of health and safety in our communities. Agencies participating this year included:

Children had an opportunity to do fun activities at a craft booth run by the Corvallis Montessori School and play at a Bubble Table, provided again this year by Old Mill Center for Children and Families.   The Red Cross Disaster Vehicle and Corvallis Police Cruiser were also big hits with the kids!

Hungry and thirsty participants enjoyed the water and snacks donated by local businesses Costco, Fred Meyer, Pepsi Cola of Corvallis, and Safeway.

Also volunteering their time to lend a festive atmosphere to the day were local musicians The Bush Pilots

Teams:

This year, 18 teams with 5 or more participants registered. Vito’s Shenanigans, a group of 25 people from Junction City and Eugene organized by Vito Funari, won for most team members registered by our early registration deadline.
For the third year in a row, Team Windermere, our Presenting Sponsor, raised the most funds of any team, over $3,000.  And by race day, Team Windermere’s ranks had swelled to 30 members!

Other teams that participated included:

Raffle Prizes:

This year we raffled off four donated prizes, 2 Season Tickets to OSU Football home games, a diamond bracelet from Olufson Design, $100 in gift certificates to Five Star Sports, and a digital camera.

All proceeds from this event are used to sustain CARDV’s shelter program, provide advocacy services to victims of domestic and sexual violence and support CARDV’s community education programs. Thank you to all the 2008 CARDV Mother’s Day Run/Walk for Safe Family participants who help support these important programs.

AND SPECIAL THANKS GOES TO…

An event like this couldn’t take place without the hard work and dedication of community volunteers and businesses. When you see these people or business, please thank them for helping make Linn and Benton Counties safer for victims of domestic and sexual violence.
