Volunteers of the Year

26 August 2016 | 3:42 pm

We are pleased to announce our Volunteers of the Year!  Recipients Gary Cloyes and Alexis McQuillan were honored in the company of their friends and co-volunteers at the 5th Annual Volunteer Appreciation Celebration.  Volunteers play a vital role in providing services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

From Gary Cloyes:
“It’s been an extraordinary opportunity for me to help out an invaluable organization that helps so many individuals who would have no where to turn to during some of the most challenging times of their lives.  By donating my time to assist CARDV in various handyman type projects will allow usual labor costs to be used directly with helping those in need.  I feel very fortunate to have crossed paths with this wonderful organization and look forward to continuing assisting them in future projects.”
—Gary Cloyes helps keep CARDV’s facilities in good repair.  He's adjusted doors, patched sheetrock holes, painted, installed pantry shelving, moved furniture, and replaced more miniblinds than we can count.  He is especially revered for replacing the insulation and some rotting wall studs in the well water pump house behind the Administrative Office, which involved dodging a rat.  We are grateful to Gary for his unfailingly good cheer and his willingness to tackle whatever needs to be done.
From Alexis McQuillan:
"I absolutely LOVE volunteering with CARDV!  I'm continually inspired by CARDV staff, who work extremely hard to help survivors find safe, healthy, and fulfilling new paths for their lives.  Working with the Safe Families Breakfast Committee is so much fun - members are energetic, creative, and work collaboratively every year to put together an amazing fundraising event to support survivors.  I also love working in shelter, particularly with young moms.  Being a mom to young children is challenging and I love supporting moms by giving them a break so they can shower or have a few moments to themselves, acting as a sounding board for all kinds of things, and just being present to give support and help in any way I can.  I definitely get more out of volunteering at CARDV than I give!"

—Since 2014, Alexis McQuillan has been volunteering with CARDV giving countless hours to our organization. Alexis helps reduce major barriers for survivors accessing resources by providing transportation, childcare and emotional support. She always has a positive attitude and is extremely engaged during all of her volunteer roles.  Beyond her amazing dedication of service to survivors, Alexis also donates her time as CARDV’s Annual Safe Families Breakfast Committee Chair and serves as a table captain. She delivers information to the community promoting CARDV’s services at various events. Thanks to her generous efforts we are able to go above and beyond to continue being effective in reaching survivors and community members. Thank you, Alexis!
